UAE Driving Rules

Essential Guide for Dubai & UAE

Driving in the UAE is a spectacular experience, with world-class infrastructure and multi-lane highways. However, the country enforces strict traffic laws monitored by advanced radar networks. Whether you are driving a luxury SUV or a high-performance supercar, it is vital to understand these rules.

1. Essential Driving Rules

To ensure a safe driving experience across the Emirates, keep these fundamental laws in mind:

  • In the UAE, vehicles drive on the right-hand side of the road.
  • Seatbelts are strictly mandatory for the driver and all passengers.
  • Using a mobile phone while driving is illegal and heavily penalized.
  • There is a zero-tolerance policy (0.0%) for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

2. Speed Limits & The "Grace Buffer"

Speed limits vary depending on the road, but the UAE has a unique "grace buffer" system you must understand:

  • Urban areas generally range from 40 km/h to 80 km/h.
  • Major highways (like Sheikh Zayed Road) typically range from 100 km/h to 120 km/h.
  • Dubai & Northern Emirates have a 20 km/h grace buffer. If a sign says 100 km/h, the radar flashes at 121 km/h.

Important Exception: Abu Dhabi

The Emirate of Abu Dhabi does NOT have a grace buffer. If the sign says 140 km/h, the radar will flash at 141 km/h. Pay close attention when crossing the Dubai-Abu Dhabi border.

3. Salik (Toll Gates)

Dubai operates an automated, ticketless toll system called Salik. You do not need to stop or slow down at these gates.

  • All Mirage Motors vehicles are fitted with Salik tags.
  • Each time you pass under a Salik gate, a charge of AED 5.25 is incurred.
  • These charges are logged automatically and will be deducted from your security deposit at the end of the rental.

4. Parking Guidelines

Public parking in Dubai is heavily monitored. Ensure you pay for parking to avoid immediate fines.

  • Paid parking applies Monday to Saturday (8:00 AM to 10:00 PM).
  • Public parking is generally free on Sundays and official public holidays.
  • You can pay using parking meters (coins), SMS, or via the official RTA Dubai mobile app.

5. Major Traffic Fines

The UAE uses a black point system alongside heavy financial penalties for severe offenses. All fines incurred during your rental period will be charged to you.

Speeding

AED 300 to AED 3,000 depending on how much the limit was exceeded.

Running a Red Light

AED 1,000, 12 black points, and a massive 30-day vehicle impound fee.

Reckless Driving

AED 2,000, 23 black points, and 60 days vehicle impoundment.

Using Mobile Phone

AED 800 and 4 black points.

6. Accident Protocol

If you are involved in a traffic accident, regardless of who is at fault, you must follow this procedure:

  • Do not leave the scene of the accident.
  • If it is a minor accident with no injuries, move the cars to the side of the road to avoid blocking traffic.
  • Call the Police immediately (Dial 999) or report it via the Dubai Police App.
  • Wait for the Police to issue an official Police Report.
  • Contact Mirage Motors immediately to inform us of the situation.

Without a valid UAE Police Report, your insurance coverage is completely voided, and you will be 100% financially liable for all damages.
